the strokes (illustration for Rolling Stone Magazine.)

je n'ai jamais bien compris l'interet pour The Strokes...un rock new yorkais tout pâle et loin du niveau de leurs aînés: Television, Paul Collins' Beat...
i have never understood what The Strokes were all about...some lame and pale-looking N.Y. rock'n'roll far from their elders: Television, Paul Collins' Beat...

miles davis (text and illustration.)

M. Buchanan  aimait bien Miles.

/A text i wrote about Miles Davis:

March 1959, and it's the dawn of the second day, and Miles is sitting down, smoking one last cigarette. He is leaning his head, which is disappearing into a comforting shadow, and he is remembering.

He is remembering all these childhood walks, when his grandfather was accompaning him on the sinuous and twisted paths of Arkansas, where some arrogant wooden churches were defying time and men.

And he is remembering all These voices coming through the wild trees and fearful hills crowded by shrieking owls, looking for the horizon where last rays of daylight were floating away. All these uneasy gospel songs, worried hymns, but also some joyous tunes of hope and life. these voices talked to him, wrapped him up like they were coming home...

Miles is remembering  Lincoln High where Mr. Buchanan was teaching him how to play cornet. Always the same thing, these boring military marches had to be played, but as soon as the venerable teacher was leaving the room, the whole class bursted out into a saving and devilish jazz shout.

Mr.Buchanan used to like Miles a lot. He used to say to him: "Would you stop shaking all these notes around! You'll be shaking when you get old! Try to develop your own style and become a real trumpet player!"

And finally, Miles is remembering his father's advice when he showed him a bird outside on a window pane, telling him: "You see, Miles, this is a blackbird, he copies all the other birds' singing, and you can't do that. Just be yourself, I trust you."

And Miles is stepping out of the dark, feeling stronger and filled with confidence. He is slowly standing up, taking his instrument and he is seeing a fleeting flash of lighting on the ceiling. Kind of blue.

et ces lignes sublimes.../and these sublime lines...

" Those few steps from the landing to Albertine's door, those few steps which no one now could prevent my taking, I took with delight, with prudence, as though plunged into a new and strange element, as if in going forward I had been gently displacing the liquid stream of happiness, and at the same time with a strange feeling of absolute power, and of entering at length into an inheritance which had belonged to me from all time."
